“Are you alright, sir?” asked one.

Alaric nodded and said they should leave and return to the army. As they left the plateau, he turned in his saddle and looked back at the hut, but there was no sign of the woman. He was quiet on the return journey and slept little that night.

Chapter 31

The Emperors’ Court, Constantinople, 15th September 396 AD

T imasius sat in the accused’s chair in the court and looked up at the child emperor sitting in the judge’s seat. To him, Arcadius was still a child, even though he was now eighteen years old. The face was devoid of intelligence, the eyes drooping, the fat lips pursing. He fidgeted and looked for all the world as if he just wanted to get out the room. Never mind that the future, or life even, of one of his most senior generals now hung in the balance.
